  1. H2O

We all know we should drink plenty of water every day but let’s face it, we all have those days when we are so busy, rushing to fit everything in. Simply staying hydrated is easily forgotten.

Any healthcare professional will tell you how important water is for our bodies and minds to function. Beauty experts will sing its praises to help your skin to retain moisture and look great.

So prepare for your portrait or professional headshots by getting more water into your system. Write it on a to do list, stick a post-it note on the fridge or set hourly reminders on your phone. Whatever works for you. So, skip the booze and the caffeine, sip on some water and stay hydrated!

  1. Choose clothing that represents who you are.

If you are an entrepreneur or business manager you may want to wear something that makes you look professional and trustworthy. Perhaps a sharp suit or a crisp shirt.

If you are an artist or a romantic at heart you might want to choose something flowing and comfortable to reflect your creative side.

For those life of the party personalities you might want to wear bright and bold colours to accentuate the bright and bubbly you.

If fitness is your thing make sure your clothes show off those muscles you have worked so hard for!

Actors, think about the roles you want to audition for that you might not be getting and the present moment. How would you be dressed in your dream role? Prepare something from your wardrobe to show your potential.

  1. Make up or no make up?

If you love your makeup and would never leave the house without it, by all means, wear your make up to the portrait shoot. Just remember not to put any more on than you usually would. Clean and minimal makeup always works best.

If make up is a bit scary and you can never seem to draw that eyeliner in a straight line, don’t panic. Wear very light makeup or none at all.

Many photographers will work with professional make-up artists who are experts at making you look your best. Ask your photographer about hiring a make-up artist for your portrait shoot.

  1. Eat a good meal

Sitting in front of a camera for an hour or two can be very tiring work. Make sure you have the energy to stay upbeat and focused the whole way through by eating a good meal in preparation for your photo shoot. Eat healthy, include some protein and low GI foods. You don’t want to have a sugar crash half way through your session.

  1. Arrive early

The early bird catches the worm, or in this case, the early client gets the best out of their photo shoot. Aiming to be 15 minutes early to your appointment means you will have more time to prepare and familiarise yourself with the environment. More importantly, you will be relaxed and calm, not rushed and stressed.

  1. Practise posing

This may sound silly but trust us, it works. Prepare for your portrait in just a few minutes by pulling faces in front of a mirror. It can help you understand how you will look in front of the camera. Smile, smile wider, smile with your eyes. Learn to understand what this feels like so when you have a camera pointed in your direction you will be ready to flash your pearly whites.

  1. Trust your photographer

The better your relationship with your photographer, the better you will look and feel during your portrait session. Read your photographer’s blog, check out their online gallery or interact with them on social media.

The best way to get to know them is by meeting them in person. Try contacting your photographer for a consultation over a coffee. You might even make a new friend!
